Fire and EMS news, straight from the radio.

Lakes Area Wire is a Binary Rogue LLC project. It's free and independent, and it isn't affiliated with any fire department, police agency or dispatch center.

How it works

Our own radios record Oakland County's fire and EMS radio around the clock. A computer turns each call into text. Then AI groups the calls about the same scene into one incident and writes a short summary. Nobody reviews them before they go up. How it works has the details.

What we cover

Sixteen towns: Walled Lake, Novi, Commerce Township (with Wolverine Lake), Wixom, West Bloomfield (with Orchard Lake and Keego Harbor), White Lake, Waterford (with Pontiac), Highland, Milford, Lyon Township, South Lyon, Farmington Hills, Farmington, Bloomfield Township, Springfield Township and Independence Township (with Clarkston).

Fire and EMS only. Police radio is encrypted, so we can't hear it.

Where coverage is thin

Two towns send part of their calls over channels we can't hear, so they show far fewer incidents here than towns their size:

  • Farmington: we hear its fire channel, but most of its medical calls aren't dispatched on a channel we can receive.
  • South Lyon: its EMS channel is encrypted, so most of its medical calls don't show up.

If a call you know about isn't here, that's usually why.

Summaries can be wrong

Radio is noisy and AI makes mistakes: a misheard street, the wrong town, a call that sounded worse than it was. That's why the radio audio sits under every summary, so you can hear it for yourself (we keep audio for 90 days). Summaries never name people.
